Green ELCSA is excited to announce the launch of the Green Champions Training 2026, a four-week online training experience designed to equip young people and committed ELCSA members to lead environmental action in their churches and communities.
The programme will run from 05 May to 27 May 2027, followed by a three-month project implementation phase (June - August 2026) and a final certification gathering in September 2026.
As the climate crisis intensifies and communities across Southern Africa continue to face environmental challenges, ranging from pollution and water scarcity to flooding and food insecurity, our calling as people of faith has never been clearer. We are called to defend, protect, and heal God’s creation. This programme will help us do exactly that.
What Is the Green Champions Training Programme?
The Green Champions Training Programme is a structured capacity-building initiative aimed at developing a new generation of Eco-Champions within ELCSA. Participants will receive training in:
Eco-theology & creation care
Climate change awareness
UNFCCC & global climate frameworks
Africa’s climate context
Environmental skills & sustainable practices
Community project design
Advocacy, mobilisation & leadership
Each session runs for 1 hour 30 minutes, twice per week, over eight sessions.
From Training to Action: June - August 2026
After completing the training, participants will be commissioned to implement environmental projects in their congregations or communities. These may include:
Food gardens
Recycling initiatives
Water-saving projects
Climate awareness campaigns
Clean-up movements
Energy-efficiency efforts
Youth-led eco-ministries
Participants will receive mentorship and support throughout the implementation period.
Final Certification - September 2026
All participants who complete the training and implement their projects will be invited to a 2-hour online gathering to share their impact, reflect on lessons learned, and receive their Green ELCSA Green Champion Certificate.
Why This Matters for ELCSA
This programme contributes directly to ELCSA’s mission to care for creation, strengthen youth leadership, and advance climate justice. It also aligns with growing commitments within the global communion, to ensure that churches remain active and prophetic voices in the climate struggle.
By empowering youth and members at the parish level, ELCSA can build a strong movement that restores ecosystems, protects communities, and responds faithfully to God’s call to steward the earth.
